Your role
Performs specialized tasks in digital marketing, graphics, or branding, consistently conceiving unique digital design with experience translating existing content for different platforms. Using sophisticated techniques and applying professional experience and creative flair, produces an artistically superior and effective product. Imprints a personal unique style on the content.
The Art Director is responsible for the artistic design of digital content for CBC’s brand social channels across multiple platforms with a focus on creating, packaging and publishing digital content for Snapchat, though may include other platforms. Develop storyboards, design motion graphics, edit photos, contribute to brainstorms and work from a multi-platform content calendar, collaborate on digital branding, experiment with new forms of storytelling and have the ability to both conceptualize and build digital content that is informative, timely, fresh and fun, aligned with CBC’s brand voice and social platform best practices/style guides. They are the decision maker responsible for the quality of the finished product.
Work is generally performed according to accepted CBC or industry standards but there is wide latitude for independent action, judgment and initiative. Duties are performed with minimal direction and in collaboration with programming personnel. There are often requirements to be self-administered with the expectation of producing desired results within guidelines.
Requires knowledge of the latest tech and social trends, the understanding of metrics, and the ability to create unique online user experiences. Digital world requires real-time responses and content development.
Key Tasks:
  • Working closely with the Programming teams across all CBC verticals (Life, Docs, Sports, Comedy, Arts, Music, Radio, Podcasts, Parents) along with Local teams, selects topics/content while considering the audience and platform editorial guidelines, develops visual concepts, leads the overall creative design and production of digital content for social platforms.
  • Develops a copy outline for each edition based on existing content, ensuring inclusivity in language. Follows best practices/ guidelines for copy length for each social platform.
  • Pulls and incorporates audio excerpts from CBC programming (Radio segments or Podcasts) to accompany content, as needed.
  • Sources imagery from CBC and/or stock photography, being mindful of inclusivity when selecting imagery. Creates original illustrations.
  • Creates design for Snapchat original content and leverages templated designs when needed, converting horizontal video assets to vertical video.
  • Selects stock music from music libraries for each edition, aligned with mood and genre of topics/content.
  • Consults with programming teams (digital producers and producers) from CBC verticals throughout creative process.
  • Packages, schedules/ publishes content on a weekly basis.
  • Experiments and devises new approaches and methods for storytelling and publishing leveraging analytics/performance data.
  • Participates as an active member of the social team throughout the design and production process to ensure continuity of brand.
  • Consults with others on the social team to ensure continuity of creative concept if content is being used cross-platform, including the optimum design and visual unity.
  • Leverages analytics/insights to better understand the audience, what content performs and adjust the approach.
  • Makes presentations, providing insights and recommendations.
  • Works within the established budget as required and controls the design costs, monitoring deviations and taking corrective measures.
As assigned or required, may perform any or all of the following tasks:
  • Assist in the training of others.
We are looking for a candidate with the following: 
  • Post-secondary education in Graphic Design, Interactive Design or Development, Computer Graphics.
  • At least four years of directly related experience in digital marketing/ social media, including demonstrated storytelling experience in digital media; experience packaging vertical video.
  • Creative thinker and visual storyteller; passionate about design and typography.
  • Requires a deep understanding of social media and video platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube.
  • Requires a superior knowledge and understanding of content marketing, branding and production.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Adobe After Effects and knowledge of Premiere and Photoshop, among others. Experience scheduling and publishing content in Snapchat Story Studio a plus.
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit; test-and-learn approach to content creation.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Understanding of and passion for the CBC’s mandate, brand and programming.
  • Able and willingness to work overtime and on weekends, when required.
