Job Summary/Main Purpose

AIFS is seeking to establish a pool of high-quality adjunct faculty for US university level course teaching for our semester, summer and January term programmes. We particularly invite applications from the following disciplines:  Journalism, Literature, Public Speaking, Environmental Science, Criminology, Women’s Studies, Film Studies, Advertising, Marketing, Economics, Politics, Psychology, Health Care and Citizenship. Courses are to be taught to US undergraduate students who are studying abroad in London for short term periods.

This pool will be utilized on an as-needed basis. Courses will be taught over 13-week semesters (Fall and Spring) and 3-week January term and Summer programmes. Teaching assignments are available on a course by course (short term contract) basis and are dependent upon student enrolment. Your application will remain active until December 2021. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Teaching will primarily take place in our study abroad centre in Kensington, London but may also incorporate a second location, as part of a travelling programme. Job Responsibilities

  • Meet all designated course instruction guidelines.
  • Design a week-by-week teaching schedule as part of the course syllabus, including setting readings and assignments.
  • Grade assignments and exams in a timely manner.
  • Respond to student inquiries within 24 hours.
  • Submit final grades (and mid-semester grades if required) according to AIFS policy.

Teaching Methods

US students are accustomed to a high level of active participation in class so an interactive approach to learning is strongly encouraged. Faculty are required to inspire students while teaching concepts, skills and best practice, dependent on the specific course.  In most cases, instructors will be encouraged to include relevant field trips and to use London as a learning resource. Note that while the intention is for courses to be taught in person, faculty will be required to deliver course teaching online should the need arise.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree or above in a related field with experience and specialized expertise directly related to the position is preferred and/or significant professional experience in lieu of a Master’s degree.
  • Demonstration of teaching experience or the potential to successfully teach an undergraduate course in a university setting. At least 2 years of teaching experience is preferred.
  • Online teaching and/or learning experience. Previous experience teaching international students/in a study abroad capacity and/or cross-cultural teaching experience is preferred, but is not essential.
  • Strong interpersonal skills when relating to students.
  • Time management skills – you must be able to devote adequate time to courses, communicating timely feedback and engaging regularly in discussions.
  • Effective written communication skills.
