Full-Time Academic Advisor for Journalism

Job Description

The Upper Division Advising Center within University College at Ball State University welcomes applications for the position of Academic Advisor for Journalism from individuals who are passionate about assisting undergraduate students in their journey of discovery and persistence to degree completion. Working under the direction of an Academic Advising Coordinator, this advisor will manage an assigned caseload of students and provide comprehensive academic advising and student success strategies.

The Academic Advisor for Journalism will assist the departments in endeavors related to student academic success. The advisor will guide students in understanding their degree requirements, academic policies, university procedures, and the university resources available to make informed decisions regarding their degree program. Academic Advising within University College at Ball State University is uniquely organized to serve the needs of first-year students and upper-division students. The dynamic mix of advisors and programs in each unit overlap and collaborate in activities beneficial to students and colleagues alike with an opportunity to participate in professional networks such as the Indiana Academic Advising Network (IAAN).

Minimum Qualifications:  Master’s degree from an accredited institution by date of appointment.  One year of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related field. Ability to collaborate effectively with students, faculty, and administration; ability to identify barriers to student success and facilitate effective remedies; ability to synthesize information and prioritize goals; ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal platforms; ability to maintain confidentiality and respect for diversity; ability to utilize advising software tools.

 

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

 

Preferred Qualifications:  One year of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related field in higher education; familiarity with Ball State curriculum; familiarity with Banner and Degree Works. Knowledge of Journalism department specializations.
