Salary Range: $59,355 – $71,923 annually

  

Essential Functions and Objectives:

Responsible for the day to day stability of a specific unit within the department. Directs and monitors the work effort of others to ensure the team operates smoothly and efficiently.

Supervises day-to-day operations of student transportation in one of two terminal locations. Supervised staff picks up and drop off students at regularly scheduled neighborhood locations, in accordance with Federal, State, local laws and regulations (e.g., Colorado Department of Education (CDE); Denver Public Schools (DPS) training, policies and procedures; and safety rules and regulations. This is a working supervisory position where bus driving may be required.

– Operational effectiveness: ensures completion of daily activities; directs and supports the team’s work efforts, maximizes productivity and achieves short term goals. Improves the team environment; plans, evaluates, and guides the behaviors of direct reports.

– Controls quality: closely tracks efforts to confirm work is performed according to standards; checks progress, evaluates accuracy, discovers deviations and identifies solutions.

– Coaches and advises: leads and influences the team’s best work by serving as an escalation point, solving routine problems, preventing conflicts, and giving direct feedback. Provides instruction and guidance to ensure full understanding of designated activities.

– Training and development: provides ongoing opportunities to help improve daily work skills; educates new team members, hosts meetings, mentors, and allows showcase of strengths. Ensures compliance with district by implementing and enforcing standard practices and procedures.

– Communication: maintains a close relationship and regularly discusses workload and deadlines with the team. Report status to team members and managers, including cost, scope, quality, time, performance, and output to create a positive team atmosphere and keep everyone informed.

– Schedule and supervise day-to-day operations of drivers and paraprofessionals in accordance with District policy. Adjust daily schedule and work assignments to ensure transportation services are not delayed or interrupted. 

– Evaluate DPS transportation services and ensure consistency with School Board policy. 

Review and follow Federal, State and Local rules and regulations and procedures applicable to passenger transportation. 

– Maintain employee personnel records; ensure that they are complete and accurate.

– Review and enter information into the Kronos Workforce Timekeeper program, correcting time clock errors, and approving employee time. 

– Monitor payroll budget by reviewing employee attendance; initiate corrective employee action as needed. 

– Investigate employee complaints. 

– Monitor and track submitted driver forms to ensure completion and accuracy. 

– Respond to accident scenes, determining physical condition of employees, students or teachers; ensure paperwork is completed; communicate with emergency personnel; and follow up with drug test as needed. 

– Train and coach drivers and paraprofessionals in a variety of areas such as job performance and student interaction. Ensure that drivers and paraprofessionals follow the DPS dress code and wear proper attire and safety items, taking into consideration weather conditions. 

– Supervise driver compliance with safety measures and District policy, and implement corrective action when necessary. 

– Enforce the controlled substance testing program. 

– Communicate with school personnel, parents or guardians of students regarding student behavior issues; and route and safety concerns. 

– Review bus camera video in order to identify and substantiate customer concerns and issues. Manage passenger and student behavior using student management skills to ensure safety. Resolve concerns and communicate with passengers and students using a customer services orientation. 

– Monitor terminal to ensure cleanliness and safe working conditions .Inspect buses for cleanliness, safety compliance, and need for maintenance. 

– Dispatch drivers and paraprofessionals in person using dispatch two way radio. 

– Supervise the transportation of special needs students; ensure installation and operation of proper special needs equipment. 

– Drive multi-passenger vehicles to transport students between neighborhoods, schools, and school activities. 

– Pick up and drop off students at regularly scheduled neighborhood locations, following DPS policy. 

– Assist and secure students passengers during boarding and unloading, according to policies and procedures. Follow safety rules during bus operations at bus stops and school drop-off locations. 

– Report incidents of suspected child abuse. 

– Perform other duties as assigned. 

– This is a safety-sensitive position within the DPS School District and mandatory position requirements include: a copy of current Driving Record at time of hire, clear CBI criminal/background investigation and compliance with Drug Free/Pre-hire and

Random Drug testing conducted throughout duration of assignment.

Knowledge, Experience, & Other Qualifications:

 

– A valid Colorado commercial driver’s license (CDL) – Class B with P2S endorsements is required to be obtained within 6 months of employment if not already held. 

– Must meet insurability requirements of the Self Insurance Pool for driving a district vehicle Must pass Department of Transportation physical (DOT). 

– Must be certified by Red Cross for CPR (within 90 days after employment).

– Three (3) to five (5) years experience in the transportation industry.

– One (1) year experience in a supervisory, leadership or management position in a transportation organization. 

– Experience working in a collective bargaining units.

– Excellent communication skills both verbally and written. 

– Experience and proficiency with Google and Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Word, and PowerPoint). 

– Ability to motivate and influence others

– Ability to effectively lead a team

– Ability to set goals, work independently and drive results

– Self-starter/leader who can anticipate department needs in a proactive (versus, reactive) manner

– Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals at all different levels in the organization

– Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multicultural environment with district and school leaders, faculty, staff and students

– Demonstrated proficiency with Google and Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and Outlook

– Outstanding facilitation and communication skills, including ability to inspire others

– High degree of integrity in handling confidential information

– Knowledge of the locations and routes to all DPS facilities and other landmarks and streets in Denver. 

– Maintain current knowledge of special needs equipment use and installation. 

– Knowledge of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and related software preferred. 

– Knowledge of Federal, State and local student transportation laws and regulations. 

– Ability to communicate with a diverse student population. 

– Ability to Work effectively with diverse staff at all levels, in all departments. 

– Ability to solve problems and make decisions quickly according to guidelines with consideration of the safety and health of others.

– Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred.

 

Education Requirements:

– High school diploma or equivalent.

– Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
