Job Description

SHOP SUPERVISOR

Location: Transportation, Central

235 work days

FTE: 1.0

Salary Range: $54,087 – $65,593 annually – commensurate with experience

Essential Functions and Objectives:

Supervises and coordinates personnel and the repair and maintenance of Denver Public School (DPS) vehicles.

– Maintain training, Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) testing and certification records; ensure that District is in compliance with safety regulations (e.g., Occupational Safety Hazards Administration (OSHA).

– Respond to vehicle repair requests; ensure that repairs are performed as quickly as possible and all equipment is operational.

– Schedule inspections of Denver Public Schools (DPS) vehicles.

– Coordinate the outsourcing of repairs to external labor by estimating the cost of repairs; review service bids from vendors; obtain purchase orders for repair costs; and monitor quality of repairs completed by vendor.

– Track warranty repairs to ensure that the District is not charged for items covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.

– Monitor tool and part inventories and the condition and maintenance of shops to ensure adequate working conditions.

– Inspect and monitor work areas and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), examines tools and equipment, and provides employee safety training to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules.

– Ensure that maintenance personnel wear proper attire and safety items (e.g., steel toed shoes, safety glasses).

– Monitor fleet maintenance expenditures and notify supervisor of extraordinary expenses.

– Participate in budget preparation and administration, coordinate purchasing and documentation, and monitor departmental expenditures.

– Perform skilled repair and maintenance operations, using equipment (e.g., hand and power tools, hydraulic presses and shears, and welding equipment); road test vehicle to verify repairs.

– Conduct quality assurance inspections of fleet.

– Conducts new shop employee orientations.

– Supervise and schedule available training opportunities and arrange for the on-going education of District technicians; ensure that all technicians are current in the latest technology, diagnosis and repair skills.

– Create safe work environment by monitoring shop areas, examining tools and equipment; provide safety training.

– Counsel employees about work-related issues (e.g., work performance, work schedule) and assist employees to correct job-skill deficiencies.

– Monitor employee’s work level and reviews work performance, ensuring technicians properly diagnosis and correctly repair DPS vehicles; keep employee desk files logging employee communications.

– Communicate fleet maintenance schedule and concerns with lead supervisor and fleet manager.

– Review employee attendance (e.g., tardiness, absence), initiating corrective employee action as needed.

– Verify technician time and approve overtime.

– Monitor and manage driver defect repair process to ensure completion and accuracy.

– Track, schedule, record maintenance activities by utilizing computerized data (e.g., defects, repair history) ensuring maintenance standards are met.

– Serve as on-call maintenance responder and coordinate on-call with maintenance personnel.

– Execute contingency plans during inclement weather operations.

– Perform other duties as assigned.

– This is a safety-sensitive position within the DPS School District and mandatory position requirements include: a copy of current Driving Record at time of hire, clear CBI criminal/background investigation and compliance with Drug Free/Pre-hire and Random Drug testing conducted throughout duration of assignment.

Knowledge, Experience, & Other Qualifications:

– Minimum of three (3) years experience in a transportation organization, preferably school bus operations and fleet maintenance preferred.

– Minimum of one (1) year experience in a supervisory, leadership or management position in a fleet maintenance environment.

– Three (3) to five (5) years mechanic experience.

– Experience with long-term planning and scheduling of repairs and maintenance for school bus operations preferred.

– Experience working with collective bargaining units.

– Excellent communication skills both verbally and written.

– Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).

– Experience with fleet maintenance software (e.g., Faster).

– Bilingual skills in Spanish preferred.

– Must meet CDE and FMCS inspector requirements.

– Commercial Driver’s license Class A with PS2 endorsement preferred, minimum Class B required, or ability to obtain within six months of date of hire.

– Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in bus or automobile; ASE master technician certification preferred.

– Must meet insurability requirements of the Self Insurance Pool for driving a district vehicle.

– Knowledge of repairing and maintaining mechanical equipment servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical (not electronic) principles.

– Knowledge and experience with vehicle diagnostic systems (e.g., On Board Diagnostics (OBD), Mitchell on-demand).

– Knowledge of safety issues, regulations and cost concerns when operating and repairing vehicles.

– Knowledge of Colorado Department of Education (CDE), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Fluid Mechanics & Computational Science (FMCS) rules, regulations and requirements.

– Ability to draft, lay out, and specify technical devices, parts, and equipment, and ability to provide documentation, detailed instructions, drawings, or specifications to others.

– Ability to work effectively with diverse staff at all levels, in all departments.

– Ability to plan and organize work, at times with interruptions.

– Ability to solve problems and make decisions quickly according to guidelines with consideration of safety and health of others.

Education Requirements:

– High School Diploma or GED; Associate’s degree or Journeyman license or Vocational Certification preferred.
