Lead Change: Chief of Staff for Denver Public Schools Division of Secondary Education
Do you have experience in leading organizational effectiveness or change initiatives in k-12 education and/or large, complex organizations?  Have you conducted strategic planning and project management in either private or public sectors?
The Denver Public Schools Division of Secondary Education is committed to reimagining the middle school and high school experience and educating the whole child emphasizing college and career readiness.  The director position will act as the Chief of Staff to the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education.  The Chief of Staff will handle a wide range of matters of institutional importance on behalf of all DPS secondary schools and the Office of College & Career Readiness. This position oversees all operations of the Division of Secondary Education, to include management of staff, professional learning initiatives, budgets, administration, policies, and procedures. The position will provide coordination and oversight in the development and progress monitoring of defined core initiatives for the division and serve as the Assistant Superintendent’s primary liaison with internal and external stakeholders.
Essential Functions and Objectives:
– Handles a wide range of matters of institutional importance on behalf of all DPS secondary schools and the Office of Post-Secondary Readiness. Oversees all operations of the Division of Secondary Education, to include management of staff, professional learning initiatives, budgets, administration, policies, and procedures. Provides coordination and oversight in the development and progress monitoring of defined core initiatives for the division. Serves as the Assistant Superintendent’s primary liaison with internal and external stakeholders.

– Organizes, manages and supports the Division of Secondary Education, assuring efficiency of the office operations and staff (including maintaining year-long calendars of key activities, staffing needs, evaluating/monitoring of major projects, infusion of DPS Values throughout the team culture, etc.).

– Develop systems to prioritize resources, including time to manage completion of both key tactical and strategic next steps.
– Acts as the primary representative for the goals and priorities of the Secondary Education team by serving on a variety of task-forces, cross-functional initiatives and/or designates someone to serve in that role and tracks progress.
– Provide recommendations in institutional planning, policy development, and problem resolution.
– Composes correspondence and designs presentations independently on a wide variety of matters, including material of a confidential nature for a variety of audiences.
– Provides accurate and timely information within and to the departments within Secondary Education, as well as across Denver Public Schools departments, schools, personnel, students and the public as necessary.
– Screens matters that rise to the Assistant Superintendent and tactfully assists in resolving staff, student, family, and community concerns directly or through appropriate referral.
– Maintains an understanding of the educational programs and operational functions of the Department of Secondary Education and appropriately implements policies, procedures and guidelines in coordination with key staff members.
– Plans and leads DSE leadership team meetings, professional development, retreats and department-wide events.
– Reviews, researches and summarizes a variety of key information and data around strategic initiatives and prepares or partners on the creation of related reports in partnership with other departments as needed.
– May manage budget initiatives by maintaining and monitoring office expenditures, grants (both current and future) in partnership with the Finance Department and Grants team; provides quarterly updates to the Assistant Superintendent.
– Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent.
Knowledge, Experience & Other Qualification:
– To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
– 5+ years of experience in project management, change management and/or strategic planning Experience in leading organizational effectiveness or change initiatives in k-12 education and/or large, complex organizations.
– Experience using data and advanced analytics to drive process improvements.
– Experience in positions with regular exposure to senior leadership and influencing the decision-making process to benefit strategic priorities.
– Experience in work that requires strong attention to detail, working on multiple projects at one time and tight timelines
– Knowledge and understanding of urban school systems or similar complex organizations, key goals and objectives, and policies and procedures.
– Knowledge of K-12 educational philosophy and top management administrative practices and procedures.
– Knowledge and familiarity with relevant software applications (word processing, excel, power point, project management and other organizational tools).
– Excellent organizational and communication skills (both oral and written).
– Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of diverse individuals and constituent groups.
– Strategic planning and project management skills to support the Department of Secondary Education’s core goals and objectives.
– Strong leadership and supervisory skills that promote teamwork, equity, integrity, and innovation.
– Ability to write correspondence, talking points, various communication reports, and develop high quality presentations for a variety of audiences (including top management, and internal and external audiences).
– Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from key stakeholders.
– Ability to develop and interpret data and manager resources.
– Ability to think, reason, and make sound judgments on how responsibilities are distributed and managed across diverse team.
– Ability to develop and manage a multi-million-dollar budget.
– Ability to exercise the utmost confidentiality in every aspect.
– Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with district and school leaders, faculty, staff and student.
– Has great energy and ideas to contribute to help infuse a culture of fun and collaboration to the office atmosphere.
– Teaching and school leadership experience
Education Requirements:
– Bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree is preferred.
