The Royal Navy’s Submarine Service has operated the UK’s Nuclear Deterrent every hour of every day for nearly 50 years, protecting our nation from the extreme threats. Submarine Delivery Service (SDA) are now recruiting for extraordinary people to help deliver the UK’s next generation of ballistic missile submarines – The Dreadnought Class

We are seeking individuals with Quality Assurance experience to join the Submarine Delivery Agency as a Project Quality Assurance Engineer.

As a Project Quality Assurance Engineer in the SDA you will have unrivalled opportunities to be involved in some of the most interesting and complex engineering projects being undertaken in the UK today, making these roles both exciting and challenging.

Government Quality Assurance (GQA) consists of multiple activities to be applied at all levels of Acquisition i.e. Procurement and Support. As part of the Submarine Delivery Agency, its primary role is to deliver technical assurance to Delivery Team for the management of risk, both internally and across the contractual boundary.

As our Project Quality Assurance Engineer, you will provide engineering and quality assurance advice and guidance to support our acquisition and engineering managers.

Responsibilities

The Project Quality Assurance Engineer is a deployable assignment providing expert quality assurance services within the SDA and are responsible for deploying the GQA Framework. you will provide engineering and quality assurance advice and guidance to support our acquisition and engineering managers. The roles available are extremely varied and involve working within small teams in the Field Force based at-or-near Defence supplier sites.

This is a varied role based at Abbey Wood, Bristol, providing Engineering Quality Assurance support across all domains from general engineering equipment and Submarine maintenance, Weapons and Equipment Spares Manufacture. There will also be a requirement to travel to other suppliers within the geographic area with a focus on design, manufacture and maintenance of specialist vehicles, submarine spares and weapons guidance systems. The work has a strong focus on engineering, supply chain management, maintenance, general engineering, manufacturing and assisting in supplier selection.

Involvement in a variety of high profile and technically complex defence programmes make these roles both exciting and challenging. Typical tasks might include planning for quality or reviewing and updating existing planning for quality, risk identification, setting of QA contractual standards, managing quality aspects of let contracts or undertaking the quality activities when closing a contract

You will have unrivalled opportunities to be involved in some of the most interesting and complex engineering projects being undertaken in the UK today.

These roles require regular interaction with both internal and external parties and advising a wide stakeholder community on all aspects of Quality Assurance, including setting strategy, identifying risk and working with suppliers to mitigate the impact of risk to equipment performance.

Quality Assurance Engineers within SDA will understand the engineering process used in complex acquisitions, have an ability to communicate at all levels with internal and external customers and suppliers, as well as the ability to influence engineering decision making through provision of QA advice and guidance.

To support this a broad range of engineering experience in a design, manufacturing and maintenance environment would be advantageous.

For these roles a broad range of engineering and QA experience would be beneficial as the area of operation for the post can be varied and across different domains. However there may be areas where experience in a domain specific context would be advantageous.

You will be able to demonstrate an ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, and be a motivated self-starter. There will be a requirement for short periods of detached duty in the UK which will involve overnight stays. SDA Engineers work in a function management construct therefore deployments to other teams and locations may be required and so you must be a team player in a project environment.

What you will be assessed against

To be found successful you must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

• Ideally have combined experience in Engineering and Quality Assurance, however relevant experience will also be considered
• Be qualified to HNC/NVQ Level 4 (or equivalent) in an Engineering or Science related discipline OR previous relevant work experience, ideally within Quality Assurance
• Have specific Quality Assurance experience desired however relevant experience will also be considered. This includes experience in manufacturing processes, experience in a technical environment, internal quality management and auditing experience
• Be a forward thinking individual who is able to engage with people and confident at managing people without escalation. Confident at working as part of a team, but also in isolation. Must be a team player in a project environment and a motivated self-starter

It would benefit your application should be able to demonstrate the following desirable criteria:

• BEng/BSc in an Engineering discipline, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other relevant engineering or supply chain management subject
• Be expected to achieve a MoD Practitioner Licence within 2 Years of joining. Attainment of which will be supported by a structured learning programme
• Be expected to achieve Practitioner status with the Chartered Quality Institute within 2 years of joining.
• Industry/manufacturing and QA experience gained from involvement with multiple projects and domains including supply chain management ideal
