VEHICLE SERVICE TECHNICIAN II

Location: Transportation, Central

Work Year: Traditional 245 work days – AMLG/FMGR/GRND/PROTECH

FTE: 1.0

Salary Range: Starting at $19.54 per hour, boot stipend $15.00 per month, tool stipend $24.00 a month

Essential Functions and Objectives:

The Vehicle Service Tech II performs repair, maintenance and inspections of Denver Public School (DPS) vehicles.

– Assists with required annual Colorado Department of Education (CDE) inspections.

– Performs preventative maintenance PMA and PMD repairs on district vehicles (e.g., annual inspection program, defects) in accordance with quality assurance inspection guidelines, DPS standards, and established work rules and policy.

– Completes required forms and paperwork using FASTER (e.g., inspection program, defects) in accordance with quality assurance inspection guidelines, DPS standards, and established work rules and policy.

– Completes daily time reporting and submits to Shop Supervisor (e.g., vehicle numbers, work order numbers, repair codes).

– Tracks time worked on each vehicle by type of repair according to Time on Task standards.

– Uses computer diagnostic equipment for diagnosing vehicle problems.

– Assists maintenance Technicians with major repairs, CDE inspections and service calls.

– Assists Technician I’s with daily fueling and servicing.

– Performs operator pre-trip vehicle inspections by checking condition and availability of safety and emergency equipment in accordance with Sate of Colorado and Commercial Driver’s License authority.

– Maintains work area by cleaning tables; scrubbing floors; and throwing away or recycling materials (e.g., scrap metal, oil)

– Creates safe work environment by monitoring shop areas, examining tools and equipment, and providing employee safety training.

– Participates in random drug and alcohol testing program.

– Determines work sequences of repairs and maintenance activities, based on work priority, and availability of parts.

– Participates in and and supports a team work environment by interacting with other technicians and supervisors, and assisting in the development of new practices and technology (e.g., computer system requirements).

– Communicates and coordinates fleet maintenance schedule and concerns with shop supervisor.

– Maintains safety and effective operation of personal and shop tools (e.g., floor jacks, air guns, seal driver) in accordance with guidelines (e.g., safety, instruction manual).

– Records maintenance activities by utilizing computerized system (e.g., FASTER) ensuring maintenance standards are met.

– Coordinates with parts counter clerk to ensure availability of parts needed for repair and maintenance; and checks out parts according to procedures.

– Drives district vehicles (e.g., multi-passenger buses, white fleet), obeying traffic regulations; driving defensively; reporting any accidents/incidents to the supervisor at the time of occurrence (this should be included and expected when driving and vehicle).

– Executes contingency plans during inclement weather operations.

– Attend meetings (e.g., safety, shop) to give information or discuss fleet maintenance.

– Communicates (e.g., customer service orientation) with vehicle operators during service calls or refers operator to Shop Supervisor.

– Maintains, trains other personnel in, and communicates current knowledge of fleet maintenance practices and technology (e.g., computer system requirements).

– Test drives vehicles, and tests components and systems, using diagnostic equipment.

– Works to obtain related field ASE certifications for pay and promotion purposes and once obtained, must maintain current fleet maintenance certifications (e.g., ASE, CDE).

– Performs other duties as requested.

Knowledge, Experience, & Other Qualifications:

– A current and valid State of Colorado driver’s license (CDL) – Class A and BP2S endorsements (or the ability to acquire one within 6 months).

– Knowledge of maintenance skills (e.g., electrical and mechanical systems, gasoline and diesel engines, air and hydraulic brakes, tire repair).

– Knowledge of fleet maintenance software (e.g. Faster) and vehicle diagnostic systems (e.g., On Board Diagnostics (OBD), Mitchell on-demand).

– Knowledge of safety issues and regulations when operating and repairing vehicles.

– Knowledge of Colorado Department of Education (CDE), Department of Transportation (DOT), and Fluid Mechanics & Computational Science (FMCS) rules, regulations and requirements.

– Ability to troubleshoot and technical skills for diagnosis and repair.

– Ability to work effectively as team member.

– Ability ti multi-task and complete work with frequent interruptions.

– Ability to communicate clearly in English, in both written and oral formats.

– Proficiency with MS Office and other computer software.

– Must posses a full set of tools.

– A minimum of two (2) years preventative maintenance experience is required.

Education Requirements:

– High school diploma or equivalent.

– 1-3 years mechanic experience.

– Technical community college level certificate or degree preferred.

– Technical community college college graduate in automotive/truck mechanics (1 year program), two (2) years experience

and/or

– A combination of education and experience.
