Part-Time Advocacy and Community Organization Coordinator

About the Position:

The position provides coordination of the MHB efforts related to both Advocacy and Community Organization. Coordinator will work to advance more equitable and accessible surrogacy and third-party reproduction for LGBTQ+ prospective parents, and advance the standards included in MHB’s Framework for Ethical Surrogacy. Coordinator will also help organize MHB’s participation in the greater community and MHB Members’ participation in events that further these goals.

 

Hours: 15-20/week with possibility of evolving beyond, especially if new funding sources are identified for the expansion of the position.

 

Job Duties:

Advocacy:

  • Coordinate advocacy efforts related to MHB
  • Monitor, research, and track legislation and advocacy actions related to surrogacy and third-party reproduction, especially when related to eliminating discrimination against LGBTQ+ prospective parents, in the State and Federal levels, as well as several key countries worldwide
  • Research and track the progress and programs of private sector initiatives to make gay surrogacy more accessible, such as the expansion of benefits at the workplace
  • Assist the MHB team in initiating and maintaining relationships with related LGBTQ+ parenting and infertility non-profit organizations in the USA and elsewhere
  • Develop a resource guide for intended parents, incorporating instructions and information about getting involved in advocacy
  • Keep clear records of the all advocacy issues, legislative efforts, key players and issues

 

Community Organization:

  • Assist in facilitating the participation of MHB members in advocacy, networking and community-building-and-supporting events
  • Identify and manage a pool of volunteers to assist in staffing and promoting community events
  • Assist in identifying and attaining granting sources to fund MHB’s advocacy and community organization efforts
  • Research and potentially write grants
  • Additionally: work with other departments as needed in support of Men Having Babies’ full mission

 

Requirements:

  • Two or more years of work or volunteer experience with LGBTQ+, family building, or other community coordination or similar experience
  • Knowledge of the surrogacy/third-party-reproduction process – a former intended parent or surrogate is preferred
  • Knowledge of legislative process, lobbying, grassroots and other organizing
  • Experience with advocacy efforts a strong benefit
  • Experience with community organizing a plus
  • Experience with grant writing a plus
  • Ability to work from home (personal computer and phone)
  • Some travel, evening, and weekend availability required
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

  • Willingness to take on new tasks and problem solve
  • Passion for LGBTQ+ community and family building
