Internship ACE: Survey Technician Fellowship – USFWS NE Regional Office

Job Description

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking a Survey Technician Fellow to primarily assist Land Surveying staff working on a land surveying crew in the field, cadd work, survey calculations, equipment maintenance, and more. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a working knowledge of Land Surveying instruments and field procedures.

Start Date: Summer 2021

End Date: 52 weeks from the start date

Location: This position will be based out of the USFWS Northeast Regional Office in Hadley, Massachusetts.

Compensation: The ACE Fellow will contribute ~40 hours/week and receive a living allowance of $700/week paid out biweekly for food, housing, and incidental living expenses. Finding housing is the responsibility of the intern (ACE & USFWS will help provide local knowledge of rental market, where possible).

PLC Competitive Hiring Authority: This position is authorized by the Public Land Corps (PLC) Act of 1993 and expanded by the Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2013. Interns who meet basic requirements during their term of service may be eligible to receive their Noncompetitive Hiring Eligibility Certificate to be used when applying to future federal jobs. Requirements are: (1) Intern must be between the ages of 18 to 30 and (2) Intern must complete at least 640 hours on a federally approved PLC Project. Position Description:

Land Survey Crew Field Work Percentage of Time 45%

Cadd (Office) Work Percentage of Time 30%

Survey Calculations Percentage of Time 20%

Equipment Maintenance Percentage of Time: 5%

 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Fellowship is available to US Citizens and Permanent Residents only
  • Fellow must be between the age of 18 and 30 (up to 35 for military veterans)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, be 21 years of age to drive a vehicle, provide documentation of a clean driving record; and have a personal vehicle (recommended)
  • Knowledge of land surveying field procedures and equipment requirements.
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting and surveying adjustments.
  • Knowledge and skill checking surveying equipment adjustments and make corrections.
  • Knowledge of care and maintenance of surveying equipment.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills (e.g. structured decision making and issues identification skills)
  • Good organizational skills (e.g. data management, files management).
  • Must take all measures possible to ensure the safety of yourself and others and understand all safety precautions involved
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a Federal criminal background check

Preferred:

  • Strong desire to enter the public service field as a land surveying professional.
  • Knowledge & understanding of Robotic Total Stations, GNSS receivers, tripods, optical plummets, etc.
  • Ability to read, understand and plot legal descriptions in deeds and survey data on plats.
  • Knowledge of least square adjustment computations for GNSS and terrestrial data sets.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with higher graded Land
  • Surveyors and Survey Technicians supervising assignments.
  • Ability to keep work organized and communicate orally to determine needs and follow standardized procedures.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in the mission of the USFWS and other federal land management agencies.

The Fellow must be willing to represent ACE and the FWS in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. ACE reserves the right to require drug testing.
