Full-Time GIS Software Engineer

Job Description

OVERVIEW

We are currently seeking an experienced, full-stack GIS Software Engineer to join our diverse Research & Development team (R&D). This position will play a key role in new GIS application development and effectively present complex data sets to a wide variety of end users. You will join our Software Development team and work closely with Scientists, Machine Learning and Robotics Engineers, and other groups in R&D.

The successful candidate will make a major impact, as their deliverables will contribute to the revolutionary solution as part of the world-renowned Soil Carbon program – aimed to bring together farmers and clean technology to turn climate change, economic crisis, and food insecurity into opportunities.

YOUR MISSION

To help build highly useable software solutions for our innovative biosciences company from the ground up, as well as maintain existing products that are used daily to support business activities.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Implement the enterprise’s Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), design patterns and technical standards and practices
  • Drive development of new GIS systems to advance our ground-breaking sustainability initiatives
  • Ensure that software that is deployed meets quality standards as well as functional and non-functional requirements
  • Maintain and improve existing platforms
  • Assist in refining user stories by gathering requirements from stakeholders
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvements of the team’s processes

REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 3+ years of work experience in software engineering and development
  • Experience with all phases of GIS projects (e.g., design / development / deployment)
  • Working knowledge of GIS analysis (e.g., visualization, data acquisition, conversation)
  • Proficiency with database technologies like SQL (preference to Postgres and PostGIS)
  • Strong Object-Oriented design and Java programming proficiency
  • Experience with web-based technologies like Spring Boot
  • Exposure to deploying Java / Web Services applications
  • Proficiency with JavaScript / CSS / HTML 5
  • Familiarity with current Web UX technologies (e.g., Vue.js / Angular / React)
  • Experience with a JavaScript mapping library (OpenLayers, Leaflet etc.)
  • Experience implementing SOA principles and RESTful services specifically
  • Exposure to Docker and Linux systems
  • Familiarity with cloud services (Azure, AWS)
  • Strong experience with Agile / Scrum methodologies
  • Ability to write clean and maintainable code

PREFERENCES

  • Some knowledge of Python
  • Mapping development/GIS experience using tools like Esri ArcGIS
  • Github and/or web portfolio of previous projects
  • Exposure to machine learning frameworks and concepts; and
