Reporting to the Responsible Care® Centre of Excellence Leader for Occupational Safety, Health and Hygiene, the Occupational Health (OH) Standardization and Programs Specialist is accountable for key strategic OH programs, procedures and protocols that govern the activities of the Occupational Health function including:

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Provide governance to the Occupational Health function for all Occupational Health (OH) related processes and systems
  • Drive 1NOVA Responsible Care® Standardization through consistent development, implementation, and continuous improvement of standards, programs, procedures
  • Maintain a growth mindset that supports and promotes a culture of learning for ongoing growth and development of the Occupational Health team
  • Identify critical skills required for the success and sustainability of the OH function
  • Develop and sustain OH resource skills pool through mentoring/coaching and providing guidance to the NOVA Chemicals OH team
  • Provide support to the business, working collaboratively with Operations, Leaders, Human Resources, Responsible Care® and other NOVA Chemicals stakeholders
  • Develop and execute against the NOVA Chemicals OH Playbook and Roadmap (short-term and long-term goals), applying a strategic approach that aligns to NOVA Chemicals business priorities
  • Develop and implement Risk Management Strategies across the organization

       Ensure Regulatory Compliance

  • Monitor external best practices and learnings including regulatory-related developments for 1NOVA application
  • Participate in the development and implementation of RC 14001 Management System
  • Monitor the regulatory environment and responds to changes in legislation applicable to OH programs, procedures, practices
  • Ensure worker confidential data is secured and maintained

     Maintain a State of Audit Readiness

  • Drive sustained Responsible Care® performance improvement through Assurance and key performance analytics
  • Develop and maintain the OH Responsible Care® Assurance program including facility self-assessment regulatory protocols
  • Work collaboratively with the Responsible Care® Assurance teams to maintain Responsible Care® assurance program relative to Occupational Health
  • Monitors to ensure quality assurance and consistency of OH practices and processes across the organization (i.e., Monitoring Spirometry Quality Assurance Reports)

     Support Information Systems and Workflows

  • Provide support and work collaboratively with the Cority Information Systems Specialist to ensure data integrity for reporting purposes and standardization of work flows and medical record keeping across the organization
  • Be accountable for the governance of OH related document management
  • Monitor internal data to analyze trends and issues and address risks

     Develop Clinical Practice Guidelines and Medical Protocols

  • Develop, implement, and maintain Clinical Nursing Guidelines and Medical Protocols in consultation with Corporate Medical Consultant as required

     Support the Pandemic Response

  • Research and monitor public health and government agencies to develop, implement and maintain 1NOVA pandemic quarantine protocols engaging internal and external medical experts as required
  • Work collaboratively with the OH team and Pandemic Advisory Team members to develop and implement contact tracing protocols and procedures as well as other control measures and strategies to maintain safe, reliable, competitive operations
  • Co-chair the Pandemic Advisory Team (PAT) to provide COVID-19 pandemic guidance to the organization according to evidence based guiding principles and protocols that adhere to public health and government requirements
  • Support and recommend the PPE and sanitation protocols related to an infectious disease/pandemic

     Additional Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with HR and subject matter experts to development and maintain NOVA Chemicals’ alcohol and drug testing protocols
  • Serve as Alcohol and Drug Program Administrator for self-referral and cannabis verification protocols
  • Provide oversight for the Substance Relapse Prevention Program through a third party provider
  • Provide support to site Occupational Health Professionals for complex disability case management (Alcohol and Drug, Workers Compensation, Directed Referral cases), engaging external subject matter experts as required
  • Engage in annual budget planning, managing the Occupational Health cost centers
  • Manage third-party contracts and invoice approvals
  • Serve on Crisis Management Team to provide crisis management support to the organization as required
  • Provide OH support and expertise to NOVALERT as required
  • Work collaboratively with Emergency Services and Security Specialist to manage employee Travel Health and Security Support through external provider
  • Accountable for employee Travel Health Medical Assistance and Support

What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural or Applied Sciences or equivalent, with 10+ years of practical experience or 2 year technical school diploma with typically 10+ years of related practical experience.
  • Must be a registered nurse (RN) and have certification in the specialized area of Occupational Health Nursing i.e., Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) and a minimum 10 years practical experience
  • Extensive Occupational Health knowledge that includes familiarity with applicable regulatory requirements:
    • U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
    • Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (Alberta and Ontario)
    • Workers Compensation
    • Privacy Legislation
  • Project management skills
