Part-Time Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Job Description
Under the direction of the Behavioral Health Manager, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) serves as a member of the Behavioral Health Team and performs Initial psychiatric assessments; ongoing mental health services, including furnishing and managing psychotropic medication; crisis visits for established Desert AIDS Project (DAP) clients; psychiatric consultation to other providers; ordering and review of lab work or other studies; referral to other providers as appropriate; supportive therapy/counseling as indicated. The PNP shall not independently diagnosis, treat or manage all patient conditions encountered, but rather will utilize his/her assessment and disease management skills in conjunction with the Standardized Procedures and physician consultations, as deemed appropriate, in order to meet the behavioral health needs of their patients.

Essential Functions
- Highly skilled interpersonally, with excellent relationship skills;
- Knowledgeable and skilled in evidence based care, including but not limited to Motivational Interviewing, or similar empathy-based communication strategies;
- Understanding of and sensitivity to multi-cultural community;
- Deep understanding and knowledge of mental health and substance use conditions, including both acute and chronic illness;
- Responsible for preparation of a complete record, for each patient contact with documentation in the electronic record, in accordance with established DAP protocols;
- Communication with the psychiatrist when situations arise which go beyond the intent of the Standardized Procedures or outside the scope of the PNP;
- Development of a treatment plan for all patients;
- Assure that all complicated care records are reviewed by the psychiatrist;
- Initiate, alter, discontinue and renew medications in accordance with the Standardized Procedures and approved formulary;
- Furnish only those medications within limitations as specified under the California Uniform Controlled Substance Act, the Health and Safety Code, and the approved Standardized Procedures;
- Update patient data base to include subjective data, objective data, assessment and plan for all patients under PNP care;
- Furnishes pre-packaged prescription medications in accordance with approved Standardized Procedures;
- Complies with all Federal, State and DAP requirements, including HIPAA;
- Completes all necessary documentation for 3rd party billing;
- Completes minimum of 12 client interventions per eight hour work shift, based upon template minimum of 16 available appointments per shift (50-60 minute appointment for new client; 20-30 minute appointment for return client) Participate in assigned departmental meetings;
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- Must maintain valid certification by the State of California, Board of Registered Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner;
- Must demonstrate Certification as an Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Across the LifeSpan, or Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or other nationally-recognized certifying body;
- Minimum 3 years of experience providing psychiatric care, including prescribing psychotropic medications, in an outpatient primary care or mental health setting;
- Medical expertise consistent with advanced practice nursing;
- Extensive knowledge and experience in the use of psychotropic medications;
- Extensive knowledge and experience in mental health diagnosis and treatment;
- The ability to work well with an interdisciplinary team, as well as outside agencies.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Experience working with HIV+ and/or LGBT individuals preferred;
- Experience working in FQHC;
- Experience working with underserved, homeless.
License(s) and Certification(s)
- Valid California RN license;
- Valid State of California Furnishing and Dispensing number;
- Valid DEA number;
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross accredited BLS certification.
Working Environment and Physical Demands
This job operates in an office setting and requires frequent times of sitting, standing, repetitive motion and talking. Ability to lift up to 24 pounds. Direct patient contact under normal circumstances is required. Minimal if no exposure involvement to blood, body fluids, non-intact skin or tissue specimens required. Access to patient protected health information is required.
