About Access Now
Access Now is a growing international human rights organization dedicated to defending and extending the digital rights of users at risk around the world, including issues of privacy, security, freedom of expression, and transparency. Our policy, advocacy, technology, and operations teams have staff presences in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East/North Africa (MENA), North America, and South/Southeast Asia, to provide global support to our mission.
About this role
As US Communications Fellow with Access Now, you will work closely with our regional, US Advocacy Manager and policy team, and our global Advocacy team in supporting publication and outreach efforts, elevating Access Now’s voice across media and communications channels, invoking action, and catalyzing change across our audience base.
What you will do
- Support the US team in curating content and uploading blogs, press releases, and other resources (including SEO)
- Support the US Advocacy Manager with media alerts, managing press relations, and growing press list
- Collaborate with the Advocacy team on social media content production on U.S. topics
- Collaborate on US editorial content creation including blogs, press releases, and other resources, and support the development of campaign materials and advocacy projects
- Support the US team in the production and rollout of publications, including establishing production timelines and coordinating with team members
Skills, education, and mindset you will bring
- Current student or recently graduated, seeking to build experience working in communications at a global human rights organization
- Passion for the mission, with understanding of the unique challenges at-risk and marginalized communities are confronting, as well as familiarity with (or a demonstrated willingness to learn about) developments in technology and its impact on human rights
- Strong persuasive writing skills and the ability to distill complex issues into simple, compelling messages
- Strong internal and external communication and project management skills, paired with cultural sensitivity and openness
- Excitement about continuous learning, trying new things, and being a member of a team
- Fluency in English, with the ability to write persuasive, compelling content
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and effectively balance competing priorities
It’s very helpful to have:
- Past experience with WordPress or a similar content management system (CMS)
- Past experience with Engaging Networks or a similar campaign tool
The Details
Location and Duration
This part-time fellowship is estimated to entail between 10 and 15 hours per week, with an anticipated start of 27 September and end of 17 December. While preference is for applications from candidates in Washington, DC, the fellowship may be performed remotely within the United States. The successful fellow must possess the right to work in the location in which they will be based; we are unable to sponsor visas or relocations for this role.
Remuneration
The fellowship comes with a stipend of $3,000.
