Full-Time Plant Growth Operations Technician
Job Description
OVERVIEW
We are seeking a hardworking, roll-up-the-sleeves Plant Growth Operations Technician/Horticulturist who will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day maintenance of Terramera’s state-of-art research greenhouse and growing chambers. This includes the growing, operational, mechanical and administrative components of all growing operations, all of which are very critical to the Company’s mission in developing clean food for the global population while protecting human and plant health. Reporting to the Manager, Plant Growth Operations, this position collaborates closely with other members of the Plant Growth Operations team, scientists and engineers in Research & Development and Facilities team, as well as liaises with external contractors as required.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Cultivate plants, ensuring optimal and consistent growth by continually seeking to improve the quality and standards to which the experimental plants are grown
- Assist in conducting greenhouse trials and growth chamber experiments; producing and maintaining a variety of experimental agriculturally significant crop cultivars to a high standard in order to facilitate multiple simultaneous in-planta studies
- Support the day-to-day maintenance of the greenhouse facility and growing chambers
- Recognize and respond to plant diseases and pests, including daily integrated pest management duties
- Develop and implement experimental growing methods to determine suitable plant health while actively maintaining the integrity of scientific studies
- Mix and apply fertilizers / nutrients as required
- Maximize and adjust Priva climate control parameters as needed; utilizing plant growth software and automation programs to aid growth, design, data management and research goals
- Collect biological and climatic data for in-planta trials
- Effectively communicate developments, issues, concerns with the rest of the team, and work together to implement an effective resolution
- Operate an agricultural sprayer effectively while maintaining a safety mindset
- Ensure all equipment and machinery are in optimal operating condition
- Clean greenhouse and growing equipment on a daily basis
- Perform other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job
REQUIREMENTS
- 2+ years of greenhouse, farming, and/or nursery & gardening experience
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in Agriculture, Horticulture, Botany, or related scientific field
- Valid certifications in or ability to get First Aid, Class 5 Driver’s License, and Pesticide Applicators License
- Experience in operating farm machinery or strong ability to quickly learn it
- Experience in greenhouse components and operation
- Strong mechanical skills (i.e. water pumps, air compressors, plumbing, motors and electrical systems)
- Experience with supplementary lighting, plant nutrition and climate control systems
- Ability to use microscope, pipette and other biological measurement
- Experience assisting with writing SOP is an asset
- Experience assisting with plant pathology, entomology or weed science research and product development is an asset
