Full-Time Computational Geologist/Geochemist
Job Description
OVERVIEW
We are seeking a Computational Geochemist/Geologist to develop simulation models using various molecular dynamics simulations and computational modelling techniques to understand structure and dynamics of soil carbon content and soil health. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will contribute to the revolutionary solution as part of the world-renowned Soil Carbon program – aimed to bring together farmers and clean technology to turn climate change, economic crisis, and food insecurity into opportunities.
MISSION
To develop and apply advanced machine learning models related to predicting the outcome of computational geology simulations, which plays a key role in measuring soil carbon sequestration.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Reporting to the Director, Chemistry & Bioinformatics, the Computational Geochemist/Geologist works closely with the machine learning engineers to extract features from the simulations and use them to train the machine learning models.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Design in silico models using molecular simulation techniques such as quantum mechanics and Molecular Dynamics Simulations to study interactions between various geochemical components of soil
- Advance original and independent research and development in computational geochemistry and geology
- Research and characterize chemical compounds and natural materials’ properties and generate feature databases
- Simulate reactivity of soil components in liquid, nonporous geomaterials, and amorphous phases
- Predict the effect of various natural phenomena (e.g., rain) as well as farming practices on the soil carbon content using computational modelling
- Build and operationalize algorithms that support measurement, reporting and verification of carbon to address challenges in climate change
- Produce reports of findings for presentation to technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborate with software engineers and scientists to put your models into production
- Perform other related duties in keeping with the purpose and accountabilities of the job
REQUIREMENTS
- M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Computational Science focused in Chemistry, Geochemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Earth Science, Environmental Soil Science, or related discipline
- 2+ years of research and practical experience in molecular simulations
- Advanced knowledge of environmental soil science and soil carbon measurement & modelling
- Experience with development of quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) models
- Familiarity with open-source computational chemistry software and chemical databases
- Experience with statistical analysis (e.g., experiment design and hypothesis testing)
- Strong knowledge of quantum mechanics methods such as ab initio and Density Functional Theory (DFT)
- Strong knowledge of common molecular dynamics simulation techniques
- Strong knowledge of kinetics and thermodynamics
- Proficiency with the Linux environment
- Proficiency with Python, MATLAB or R programming languages is an asset
QUALITIES
- Aptitude for interdisciplinary collaboration
- Capable of performing research on best practices and communicating results to a non-expert audience
- Ability to apply domain knowledge to ambiguous and novel situations
- Project management, collaborative, and technical leadership skills
LOCATION
- This position is remote, preferably based in Vancouver, BC but open to anywhere in Canada.
